A beautiful, vintage 1990 fine bone china teapot with gold detailing is adorned with Gloriosa Superba (also know as Fire Lilies) and butterflies. When I found this teapot I knew from its two sweeping curves that meet and cross through the centre of either side that I wanted to to create something that had a mirrored effect. Nature, life, death and reincarnation were key thoughts whilst I was working on this piece and the idea for the imagery formed gradually as I worked on it. Lilies are a well known symbols of death and grief, they often hold special meaning in funerals. Shakespeare wrote in Henry VII “like the lily that once was mistress of the field and flourished, I’ll hang my head and perish.” A quote that not only speaks to the nature of life and death, of blossoming, flourishing and perishing but also speaks to the duality of meanings in Lilies. As Lilies may symbolise death and grief they can also represent fertility, rebirth and fresh life much like the true meaning of the “Death” card in tarot that I am so fascinated by. Butterflies are an incredible symbol of transformation, and as one thing dies (the lily) it is reborn again through reincarnation (the butterfly). As you turn the teapot around it beautifully mirrors itself in all points 360 degrees, a complete circle.
